A recent study has ignited global debate by asserting the existence of an extensive subterranean city beneath Egypt’s Giza pyramids. Researchers from Italy and Scotland employed advanced radar technology, specifically Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), to detect structures extending approximately 6,500 feet below the pyramids—purportedly ten times larger than the pyramids themselves.

The investigation revealed eight vertical, cylindrical shafts surrounded by spiral staircases beneath the Khafre Pyramid, reaching depths of over 2,100 feet. Additionally, unidentified structures were detected at depths of 4,000 feet. These findings were presented during a press briefing in Italy on March 15, with the research team suggesting that such discoveries could revolutionize our understanding of ancient Egypt’s sacred geography.
However, the study has faced significant skepticism from the archaeological community. Renowned Egyptologist Dr. Zahi Hawass dismissed the claims as “completely wrong” and labeled them “fake news,” criticizing the unapproved methodologies employed. Similarly, Professor Lawrence Conyers, a radar expert at the University of Denver, argued that the technology used cannot penetrate to such depths, calling the notion of an underground city “a huge exaggeration.”
The research team, led by Professor Corrado Malanga from the University of Pisa and Filippo Biondi from the University of Strathclyde, has previously published studies using similar radar techniques. In October 2022, they reported hidden rooms and ramps inside the Khafre Pyramid, along with evidence of a thermal anomaly near its base.
Despite the controversy, the researchers plan to continue their investigations throughout 2025. They acknowledge that physical excavation would be necessary to validate their findings but recognize the challenges in obtaining the requisite approvals for such endeavors.
