Syed Bachal Shah Lakiyari was a distinguished scholar, poet, and administrator whose contributions to Sindhi literature and civil service left a lasting impact. Born on 15 September 1913 in Bhit Sharif, near Mithiani, he displayed an early inclination towards education and literature. His academic journey began in Mithiani, where he completed his matriculation, followed by higher studies at Bahauddin College, Jhona Garh, and later at the D.J. Sindh College, where he earned his graduation degree.
A lifelong learner, Syed Bachal Shah pursued multiple disciplines. In 1956, he completed his M.A. in Sindhi from Karachi and later achieved another M.A. in Muslim History from Sindh University, securing first-class honors. His academic pursuits did not stop there; he also obtained an LL.B., demonstrating his diverse intellectual interests.
Syed Bachal Shah was closely associated with some of the greatest scholars of his time, including Molana Din Muhammad Wafai. Due to his literary capabilities, he became a member of the Sindhi Adabi Board, where he worked alongside renowned intellectuals such as Syed Ghulam Mustafa Shah, A.K. Brohi, Hassamudin Rashidi, Makhdoom Talibul Mola, G. Allan, and Allama I.I. Qazi. His prose and poetry found a voice in leading publications such as Monthly Nain Zindagi, Rooh Rehan, Mehran, Touheed, Azad, and various other newspapers and magazines.
His professional career began modestly as a clerk in the Fingerprint Bureau, but his dedication and integrity led him to rise through the ranks. Over the years, he served in multiple key positions, eventually becoming Mukhtiarkar and later a Deputy Collector. Throughout his tenure in the civil service, he was known for his honesty and kindness, earning widespread respect for his unwavering commitment to justice and public service.
Beyond his administrative duties, Syed Bachal Shah was deeply admired for his literary and scholarly contributions. His works reflected a profound understanding of Sindhi culture, history, and poetry, making him a respected figure among intellectual circles.
Syed Bachal Shah Lakiyari departed from this world on the 26th of Ramazan, 1407 Hijrah. His legacy continues to inspire scholars, poets, and civil servants, embodying the ideals of knowledge, integrity, and service to society.
