Pakistan bans all New Year’s celebrations in solidarity with Palestinians

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar declared on Thursday that all New Year celebrations are prohibited throughout Pakistan. This decision stems from the nation’s expression of solidarity with Palestinians, who have been enduring severe Israeli aggression since October 7.

Pakistan has consistently voiced support for the oppressed Palestinians on the global stage, condemning Israel’s actions that have resulted in a significant loss of lives. In a televised address, Kakar highlighted the somber state of the Pakistani nation and announced the government’s decision to ban New Year-related festivities. He appealed to all Pakistanis to stand in unity with the Palestinians, emphasizing the need for simplicity in light of the catastrophic situation.

Israel’s ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza has caused extensive destruction, claiming the lives of at least 21,320 people, predominantly women and children. The conflict, now lasting more than 12 weeks, has prompted Israeli officials to commit to continuing their operations for several more months.

Addressing the grim situation in Gaza, Kakar mentioned that Pakistan has dispatched two aid shipments to Gaza, with a third on the way, aiming to alleviate the dire conditions resulting from Israel’s bombardment. Pakistani authorities are also coordinating with counterparts in Egypt and Jordan to ensure concerted efforts for the well-being of the Palestinians.

Traditionally, New Year’s celebrations, both private and government-led, are observed across Pakistan, involving youth and families. However, the government’s decision to ban celebrations is aimed at preventing accidents and casualties caused by celebratory gunfire and reckless driving.

In a parallel gesture of solidarity, Sharjah, an emirate of the United Arab Emirates with official ties to Israel, also prohibited New Year’s Eve fireworks this year. The ban, expressed as a sincere demonstration of solidarity and humanitarian cooperation, aligns with the Emirate’s support for the people of Gaza.
