Ireland assumed responsibilities as an elected member of the Security Council.

According to the Irish Foreign Ministry in Dublin, Ireland will remain a member of the Security Council until January 1, 2021.

The Foreign Ministry says UN support is a cornerstone of Irish foreign policy.

Irish Prime Minister Michael Martin says it is a great honor to be elected to the Security Council.

The Irish Prime Minister said that he would try to earn the trust of the United Nations, and that Ireland would carry out its responsibilities in the Security Council in a fair and independent manner.
