Surr Khahori of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai

By: Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti

[ This is the translation of some selected verses of Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai’s Sur Khahori sent by Zulfiqar Ali Bhatti. The translator is a lecturer at Government College Hyderabad.]

Mother I saw those, who met the Beloved,
I cannot speak anything about them,
They seek land, unheard and unseen,
They lay on pebbles and on rocks they lean,
Lighting campfire the Khahoris set off,
Knower of ridges, set eyes on Duth,
Wander with their soiled bodies and clothes,
They Spend nights in desolation,
And days in seeking mountains,
Early in the morning got ready to depart
Seeking mountains, made them dust’s part
Grieving their bodies they reached,
Highland’s farthest end at last,

To get Duth one has to suffer,
Rambling about the highland.
Mountain never gives gifts to sleepers,
Flickers of flames be seen at far off places,
Where nobody finds even birds traces.
Who else can light those fires?
Except the clusters of Kahori sires.
