Dust storm, gusty winds batter Thatta, Sujawal

THATTA: Gusty winds and dust storms kept battering Thatta, Sujawal, and the adjoining areas, clouds of dust engulfed the urban as well as rural settlements of the two districts here on Sunday.
Dust storm coupled with strong winds started blowing in the morning disrupted the power supply to these areas that disturbed routine life. However, the signboards erected in different towns of district Thatta could not be removed yet despite the existing threat of the dust storm.
District Commissioner Thatta when contacted on Sunday told that alarms had been sounded in the vulnerable areas of the district and most of the fishermen in District Thatta and Sujawal however remaining boats were being brought back to jetties with the help of the Pakistan Navy. Most of the fishermen living alongside the coastline had been evacuated to safer places; he confirmed.
Quoting the weather report issued on Sunday by the Met department he said that though the cyclone did not pose a serious threat to the coastline of Sindh despite that all possible measures had been taken in line with the directions of the Provincial Government to protect the people of coastal areas.
He said adding further that; dust/thunderstorm-rain with few moderate to heavy falls and gusty winds of 60-80km per hour in Thatta, Sujawal, Badin, Tharparkar, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, and Sanghar districts during May 17- 20 had been forecasted.
